The Little White Wedding Chapel Ranks the Fastest While the VooDoo Rooftop Nightclub Falls in Last
DULLES, VA — In a test conducted by Global Wireless Solutions, Inc. (GWS) across popular Las Vegas locations for taking “selfies,” GWS has identified which locations have the fastest upload speeds across the four major US carriers: AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless
A city of neon lights, Las Vegas is the jewel of the Mojave Desert and crowns itself as the Entertainment Capital of the World. Abundant with casinos, hotels, nightclubs, and other attractions such as aquariums, roller coasters and fine dining, the city attracts millions of tourist every year, with 39 million alone in 2013. As selfies have evolved into an increasingly popular pop culture phenomenon, it’s common to see Las Vegas visitors take photos of themselves or with friends at well-known locations. Subsequently, the selfies are typically uploaded to social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram within moments of being taken. Because these activities rely on a fast wireless connection to a carrier’s network, it is essential that the performance of these networks match the expectations of subscribers, otherwise a carrier’s reputation could be at stake.
“Las Vegas is a heavily trafficked tourist destination for not only tourists from the US but international vacationers and business travelers as well. It’s a hub of experiences and memories, and despite the old adage that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, people like to take selfies and share them with family and friends on social media, and it’s frustrating when they can’t—especially while enjoying the moment,” said Dr. Paul Carter, president and CEO of GWS. “We wanted to gauge network speed to see how well carriers meet the expectations of today’s consumer when it comes to uploading an image of you and your friends. After all, we are living in the year of the selfie.”
Ranking Network Speed Performance across Prime Selfie Locations
Performance rates across locations were determined by averaging carrier upload speeds of a two megabyte image on LTE only resulting from network benchmark tests completed at popular and scenic locations in the city. In benchmarking upload speeds across carriers among these locations, GWS found that Las Vegas’ most popular selfie spots can be ranked as follows, from fastest to slowest:
1.The Little White Wedding Chapel — 3.3 seconds
2.The Stratosphere Tower — 3.5 seconds
3.The Mandarin Bar at Mandarin Oriental — 4.0 seconds
4.Ghost Bar at the Palms — 4.3 seconds
5.The “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign — 4.4 seconds
6.The Roller Coaster at New York, New York — 4.4 seconds
7.Vegas Vic (the neon cowboy) — 4.6 seconds
8.The Eiffel Tower Experience at Paris — 5.0 seconds
9.The Bellagio Fountains — 5.5 seconds
10.The Fremont Street Experience — 5.5 seconds
11.Tao Beach — 5.9 seconds
12.The Adventure Theme Park — 6.3 seconds
13.The High Roller Ferris Wheel — 6.4 seconds
14.Lavo Lounge — 7.0 seconds
15.The Hyde Bellagio — 7.5 seconds
16.The Chateau Nightclub at Paris — 7.7 seconds
17.The Boulevard Pool at the Cosmopolitan — 8.1 seconds
18.Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay — 8.6 seconds
19.The Mix Lounge Nightclub — 9.7 seconds
20.The House of Blues at Mandalay Bay — 10.7 seconds
21.VooDoo Rooftop Nightclub at the Rio Hotel — 12.4 seconds
Methodology
GWS conducted this series of tests in order to evaluate the upload speed of a two megabyte photo on LTE-only networks at popular and scenic locations in Las Vegas. The tests were conducted using Rohde & Schwarz’s SwissQual QualiPoc Freerider. The Freerider—a portable benchmarking system—was equipped with a combination of Samsung Galaxy S III and Samsung Galaxy S IV Smartphones. The Freerider was operated by a trained GWS engineer who conducted the assessment tests and obtained LTE-only upload speeds from the packet data networks of Tier 1 carriers (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon). The figures posted have been weighted. Testing was conducted between July 28 and August 1, 2014.
